Humayun's Tomb , as the name suggests the tomb is of the Mughal Emperor Humayun . Also known as Maqbara-e-Humayun , it is the first opulent monument and the first garden tomb in India . This UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE is located near the crossing of Mathura road and Lodhi road in New Delhi , India . This magnificent monument was built by Humayun's wife Empress Bega Begum in 1558 with a spent of about 1.5 million.

The Humayun's tomb lies on the banks of the river Yamuna, in proximity to the dargah of popular Sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya . The tomb was actually the result of love of a wife for her husband . After 9 years of the death of Humayun , his wife Haji Begum . It is believed that Hazi Begum spent her last year's in the tomb .It is believed that it was she who designed the tomb . She then roped to Mirak Mirza Ghiyas ,of Afghanistan . After that the construction of the monument started .
Humayun's Tomb is considered to be the first monument to be built with red sandstone at such a great extent . The structure has set an excellent example of Mughal and Persian Architecture .Even , The Wonder of World , Taj Mahal is inspired from its structure . The use of white marble and red sandstone makes this magnificent structure an immeasurable beauty . The huge tomb has a height of 154 feet and width of 299 feet . The dynastic mausoleum has 124 small vaulted chambers within its walls . Humayun's Tomb is also famous for its splendid garden , Charbagh . Charbagh is basically a Persian-style garden surrounding the tomb structure and has a quadrilateral layout . The garden consists of paved walkways, water channels, a bath chamber, and a pavilion .
The main cenotaph lies in the central hall according to the Muslim tradition . The body faces north and the face is turned towards holy shrine Mecca . Along with Humayun's cenotaph , there are 100 other graves of royal family in the tomb including Hamida Begum, one of Humayun’s wives and Akbar’s mother , Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of Shah Jahan .
The monument is so lit up in the evening that it mimics moon light . This magnificent structure is one of its kind and takes you to the Mughal history of India. Humayun's Tomb is a glorious example of Mughal architecture and a must visit place .
