Although other jyotirlinga's deity has been established and invested with mantra Shakti. It is said that Mahakaal is made from two words. Maha means the Shiva and Kaal stands for time. Thus, this incarnation of Lord Shiva is believed to be greater than the time and protects the pure soul from harm and evil.

The Mahakaleshwar Temple is believed to be initiated by a five year child. This holy shrine is unique in itself as the main deity of Mahakaleshwar is dakshinamukhi, which means faces southwards. This unique feature of this temple is based on the tantrik tradition and is only followed in this jyotirlinga. There are also idols of Ganesha, Parvati and Kartikeya in west, north and east direction and the idol of Nandi Maharaj is established in the south direction near the main deity of Mahakaal. The shrine also has an idol of Nageshwara on the third floor of the temple and is open for darshan only on Nagpanchami. Mahakaleshwar Temple also has one of the Shakti peeth of goddess Sati.

Many devotees come at this pilgrimage site to worship the deities , especially on the occasion of Mahashivratri. Infact huge fairs are held on this occasion. Moreover, Lord Mahakaal is taken in his Shahi Savari on the occasion of last Monday of sawan for procession.
