As the name suggests Shri Krishna Janmasthan Temple is dedicated to the lord Shri Krishna . This temple is constructed around the prison cell . This prison cell is same in which lord Krishna's parents Mata Devaki and Vasudeva were imprisoned by deity's evil uncle , Kansa . It was in this cell , in which lord Krishna was born .
According to Hindu Mythology , Kansa was a tyrant, who along with some other demon kings was terrorising Mother Earth . Mother Earth took the form of a cow and went to Lord Brahma . Mother Earth along with lord Brahma and other Hindu lords went to lord Vishnu for seeking help . Deity Vishnu then assured mother earth that he will take birth as lord Krishna and will punish Kansa for his deeds .
When kansa's sister Devaki was getting married to Vasudeva , a prophesy occurred . According to which eighth child of Devaki and Vasudeva will end the life of Kansa . Kansa then imprisoned his sister and his brother in law .
As soon as a child was born to Devaki, Kansa would smash the child’s head against the walls of the prison . However , on the day of Krishna's birth , lord Vishnu appeared in front of the couple . He told them that in the guise of their son, he will return and rescue them from Kansa's autocracy . And when Krishna was born , Vasudeva found himself free . Vasudeva then took the infant to a safer place and baby Krishna removed all the obstacles in their way . After reaching , Gokul , he exchanged the baby Krishna to a baby girl of Yashoda and Nanda .
According to the tradition , a temple was built at the site of Krishna's birth (that is the prison cell ) by the great grandson of Lord Krishna Vajranabha 5000 years ago . Then it was rebuilt during the reign of Chandragupta Vikram Aditya in 400 AD . Although the temple was destroyed many times and rebuilt again . It was destroyed by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1017 AD . It was rebuilt by Raja Dhrupet Dev Januja and was again destroyed by Sikandar Lodhi .
During the reign of Jahangir, Raja Veer Singh Bundela rebuilt it with Rs 3.3 million . Again Aurangzeb destroyed it in 1669 AD and built a masjid in its place . When the city of Mathura came under Britishers, the temple area was auctioned . Later , Late Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya took the initiative to reconstruct the temple and the present day temple was finally built in February 1982 .
