Omkareshwar Temple is one of the jyotirlinga of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva. It is believed that all your past life sins are washed away even if one recite the name of 12 jyotirlinga in India every morning and evening. The holy shrine is located on the Om shaped island or Shivapuri in the Narmada river of Madhya Pradesh. The holy shrine is believed to be the abode of Lord of Omkara and Lord of Immortals.
Shri Omkareshwar Temple is special in itself. The holy shrine is situated on Om shaped island and attracts lots of devotees from all across the world. Om is the Devnagari symbol and is the holiest symbol of Hindu. The holy temple is built on the meeting point of river Narmada and Kaveri.
According to Hindu Mythology, The deity of Vindyachal Mountain range 'Vindya' prayed lord Shiva to propitiate the sins he committed. Lord Vindya also created a lingam from sand and clay. Lord Shiva was pleased from his prayers. And, manifested here in two forms. One to Omkareshwar located on the island and one to Mamleshwar located on the south bank of Narmada on the mainland.
Moreover Hindu Sculptures says that, Once during a war between Devtas and Asura, Devtas worshipped lord Shiva to save them from asuras. Pleased from the prayers lord Shiva manifested here as jyotirlinga and defeated Asuras.
Further, according to another legend, An ancestor of Lord Rama 'Medhanta' worshipped lord Shiva until he manifested here as jyotirlinga.
The Omkareshwar Temple holds immense beauty and picturesque environment. The temple is basically a three storey structure. The shrine is constructed in Nagara style and is featured with Shikhara. The temple is made up of granite stone and decorated with large pillars. Further, the Cantilever Bridge over the river Narmada enhances the beauty of Omkareshwar Temple. It is believed that worshipping Omkareshwara is equal to worshipping Kedarnath and panch Kedar. Also, it is said that Lord Shiva come here for sleeping and thus a Shayan Aarti is also performed in this temple.
The temple is so sacred that it is one of the most popular Hindu pilgrimage site.
