The Forest Research Institute of India, also known as FRI Dehradun is a research institute and was established in 1906 .The place is located at the distance of 5km from Dehradun . The research institute is famous for holding a vast collection of forestry related items in its six museums . The place is a best place as a historical landmark and a picnic spot .

Forest Research Institute , Dehradun was established in 1906 as Imperial Forest Research Institute under the British Imperial Forestry Service . The institute is famous for its education as well as a popular tourist attraction . This institution is considered as one of the oldest institute of India . The premier institute is spread over an area of 450 hectares . The architecturen of the building was designed a by C.G. Blomfield and was inaugurated in 1929 by the Viceroy , Willingdon. The institute is also known for its scenic backdrops of Doon Valley . The structure explodes it's intrinsic beauty and natural diversity and welcomes many visitors all over the year .
The main reason behind the construction of this Forest Research Institute was to study the Plants , Animals , climate and Topography of the Himalayan region . The institute also houses six museums dedicated to Forest and Research . Main attractions among them are that of Timber , Sylvicultural , non-wood and entomology Museums .
The deemed institute's infrastructure is fully equipped with amenities like laboratories , library , herbarium , printing press , arboreta and multiple areas for conducting forestry research .The institute has led to the evolution of scientific forestry and is responsible for training the forest officers and forest rangers of India .
The Institute also houses Paintings of Afshan Zaidi , a seven year old deodar Tree and the famous Botanical Garden . Apart from the main building and green lushes , the place is also famous for the opulent Greeco- Roman Architecture . Visitors also enjoy trekking through the Himalayas and enjoy the sight of Himalayan and Migratory birds .
The building was declared as a national heritage site and is also listed in the Guinness Book of Records , for being the most massive purely brick structure in the world .
