India Gate , one of the biggest gate and  the heart of the city also known as All India War Memorial is located on the eastern edge of Rajpath in New Delhi . This huge structure of 138 feet is dedicated to 82000 Indian and British soldiers who died in between 1914 and 1921 mainly during first world war , third Anglo-Afghan War .

The structure of the memorial was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens . The monument's structure is often compared with Arc-de-Triomphe (in Paris) and Gateway of India .  The construction of the monument started in the year 1921 and the cornerstone of it was laid by the Duke of Connaught and the third son of Queen Victoria . The monument is built of red and yellow sandstones . Also there is a canopy built towards the east of the gate . This canopy was a tribute to king George V (the former Emperor of India) .


At the base of the  India Gate ,there lies a black marble structure known as Amar Jawan Jyoti (Flame of Immortal Soldier) . This is a tribute to the Indian soldiers who died in Bangladesh Liberation War . It was constructed after the Indo-Pakistani War , in 1971 . The structure consists of a loaded rifle , helmet of a soldier and four eternal flames , one of which is always burning and is guarded by Indian soldiers . Indira Gandhi (prime minister of India in 1972) ignited the flame and from then on every Republic Day that is on 26 January the prime minister first visit Amar Jawan Jyoti after which the  Republic Day parade starts .

India Gate has become an iconic spot of the country and so a must visit place for tourists . The best time to visit the monument is in the evening when it is beautifully lighted up and gives its mesmerising views . It is one of the favourite place of Delhiites to spend there winter afternoon  and summer evening. One can  easily spend his/her quality time in the   monument's  green lush lawns . The Children park , boat clubs and of course the delicious street food makes the place more attractive . The monument hosts thousands of people in a single day and is one of the top tourist place in India .
