 The Lakshman Jhula is a famous hanging bridge across the river Ganga that connects two villages , Tapovan in the Tehri Garhwal district and Jonk in the Pauri Garhwal district in the north-east city of Rishikesh in an Indian state , Uttrakhand . This bridge is the major attraction of Rishikesh Tourism and welcomes thousands of tourists every year .

This bridge has its roots from the famous  Hindu Mythology Ramayana . It is believed that the lord Rama and Lakshmana crossed this place with the help of just two ropes . This bridge was then built to honour the act of bravery . 


Initially , Lakshman Jhula was built of jute but it was soon replaced by the stronger iron structure due to the frequent floods in 1939 . 
Present day bridge , is  450 feet long and is made up  of iron and is suspended at an elevation of almost 70 feet above the river . Construction of Lakshmana Jhula was completed in 1929 and is connected to the old  routes of  the shrines of kedarnath and Badrinath . 
This long suspended bridge was used by pedestrians and motorcyclists . Although , Lakshmana Jhula is not used for communication now . This is because , this bridge is 96 years old and can't hold the current traffic . To avoid any accident , the Indian government has restricted the movement over it from 12th of July 2019 .

  • Neelkantha Temple

This temple is dedicated to lord Shiva . Devotees come here to pour Ganga water on this shrine . This is one of the holiest temple of Lord Shiva . It is believed that at this place lord Shiva consumed poison (from Samudra Manthan ) and placed it into his throat .

  • Tera Manzil Temple

Tera Manzil Temple or Trayambakeshwar is one of important holy shrines in Rishikesh . It is a 13-story structured temple  and each of them have several idols of gods . This temple is famous for its amazing structure and panoramic landscape .
