 Mysore Palace , the largest Palace in India  is located in the heart of city , Mysore . This Palace is so grand that it is often compared with Buckingham Palace . It is believed that this palace was built by Yaduraya Wodeyar , first ruler of the Mysore Kingdom . One of the most beautiful palace attracts lots of tourists every year and is the most visited place in India after Taj Mahal .

This beautiful Palace stands majestically in City of Palaces , Mysore , Karnataka . Facing the Chamundi Hills . Mysore Palace also known as AmbaVilas Palace is known for its excellent Indo-Saracenic architecture . The Palace used to be the royal residence for 600 years and now is turned into a museum . Although it is still the official residence of the royal family . 


The Palace holds a rich history . It was initially built by the first ruler of Wodeyars Dynasty , king Yaduraya Wodeyar . But it was built and rebuild many times . At first this palace used to be a wooden Palace . It got stuck by lights and was then reconstructed by Kantirava Narasa Raja Wodeyar . In 1793 , Tipu Sultan took over the Wodeyars Dynasty and rebuild the palace in his way . After his death Mysore was again in the hands of Wodeyars and was rebuilt again . It was again destroyed by fire in a wedding ceremony and was last built in 1912 by Maharani Kempananjammanni Devi and her son Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV . It was designed by Henry Irwin .

The Palace holds splendid views and is the best example of Indo-Saracenic architect . It is constructed with a blend of Hindu , Rajput , Mughal and Gothic style . The fortress is a three story building with marble domes and 145 feet five story  tower . The Palace has three entry gates East Gate , South Entrance and West Entrance . Among them South Entrance is for public and others get open for special occasions . Domes of this monument is made with pink marble and the rest of the building is made with granite . The whole of the palace is surrounded with green garden .

The fortress has a lot to admire . Few of them are -

  • Visit the 12 Hindu Temples

There are 12 Hindu Temples built in between 14th and 20th centuries . Some of them are Trinesvaraswamy Temple dedicated to lord Shiva , Shweta Varahaswamy temple dedicated to lord Varaha an inclination of Lord Vishnu , Sri Lakshmiramana Swami Temple and is the oldest temple of the city .

  • Durbar Hall

Tthis hall is basically a reception hall where king used to hear his people and solve their issues . Most of the important decisions were taken here . This palace has a balcony where the king and his royal family used to sit . Most of the festivals were celebrated here . 

  • AmbaVilas

This palace was used as a hall for special guests . This hall is a small version of Durbar Hall due to same structure . Although this hall is beautiful in its own way . A Rosewood door welcomes you to the hall . This room consists of shrine of Lord Ganesha , stained glass ceiling . This room becomes more admirable because of the gold used in the glided columns . 

  • Kalyana Mantapa

This hall is a marriage hall . It is octagonal in shape . This hall is more spectacular than others . The hall is decorated with ancient painting . It has stained glass ceiling with peacock motifs and they are reflected on the floor too . The whole room is coloured with green and golden colours . 

  • Gombe Thotti

This hall contain a collection of dolls which are form early 19th and 20th century . Other than dolls this hall contains an elephant howdah decorated with 84 kg gold , Indian and European sculptures . 

  • Light and sound show

A light and sound show helds everyday (except Sunday and public holidays ) against the magnificent backdrop of the palace . The show takes you to the history of the palace . The show ends with a short description of the palace . Show helds in two languages Kannada and English . The timings are  for English language -7 to 8 pm on Thursday , Friday and Saturday and for Kannada - 7 to 8pm on Monday , Tuesday and Wednesday . Tickets cost is INR 70 for adult and INR 30 for kids . 

  • THE GOLDEN THRONE

The palace has a splendid Golden Throne . The Throne has different names that is Chinnada Simhasana and Ratna Simhasana . the throne belongs to rulers of Mysore . This throne is the major attraction in Mysore Palace .
