 Sun Temple at konarak lies on the eastern shore of Bay of Bengal . The temple is dedicated to lord Surya (Hindu God ) . The Temple is believed to be built in 13th century . The Temple is famous for comprising a giant stone chariot with 12 wheels laid with six horses . The famous Temple is situated at a distance of 35km from Odisha of India . The Temple is decorated with several designs and is one of the India's most admired Brahman sanctuaries .The Temple plays an significant role in Hindu culture and is thus depicted on the reverse side of Indian currency .

Sun Temple

The Eastern Gangas established their kingdom in the kalinga region (present day Odisha) . The Sun Temple was built by the King Narasimhadeva I . The Hindu Shrine is a great example of Kalingan Architecture and one of the finest example of Hindu Temple . The beautiful temple is famed for incorporating the Giant Chariot of Hindu God Surya . The Chariot has twelve wheels and is driven by seven horses . The whole chariot is constructed with fascinating motifs , art work , reliefs of various animals all laid on the stone . These motifs represent different seasons and months of the year . Another prominent structures are Vimana ( principal sanctuary), Shikhara (crowning cap ) , Jahamogana (audience hall ) and natmandir (dancing hall ) . 

Although many of the structure at Sun Temple are ruined today . Though the reason behind destruction of the konark Temple is undefined and unknown . According to few theories , the reason for the destruction is laid with natural damage with time . In 1984 , Sun Temple was declared as a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE . Konark Temple being a pilgrimage site continues to draw devotees . The holy site is most visited during Chandrabhaga Mela in February .
