City Palace of Udaipur is located on the banks of Lake Pichola and is a world famous tourist attraction . Construction of this magnificent structure was begun in 1599 by the Mewar ruler Maharana Udai Singh II. The Palace was built in 400 years ago . The Palace holds breathtaking views and is considered as the largest royal complex in Rajasthan .

Maharana Uday Singh II established his Mewar kingdom at Chittor in 1537 but when Mughal started coming in power , Maharana found signs of losing control of the fort in wars with the Mughals. Udai Singh II, then , chose this site near Lake Pichola for his new kingdom . And , It was then the City Palace of Udaipur was built by the Mewar ruler Maharana Uday Singh II .
Udaipur's City Palace is built in Rajput style of architecture . Also a blend of rich Rajasthani, Mughal, Medieval, European and Chinese styles of architecture are also found . The magnificent structure has a height of about 244m . The Palace is regarded as the largest royal complex in the state of Rajasthan . The whole of the fort is constructed of granite and marbles . Gracefully designed interiors include balconies, towers and cupolas which are decorated with a blend of impressive mirror and marble work, intricate mural wall-paintings, silver works, decorative work and leftovers of colored glass .
The main part of the Palace has been turned into a museum . Entry to the museum is through Ganesh Deori (Door to Lord Ganesha) . This museum includes several splendid structures . They are Rai Angan (Royal Courtyard), Krishna Vilas, Badi Mahal, Mor Chowk, Sheesh Mehal (ravishing compilation of a place full of mirrors), Zenana Mahal (Ladies Chamber) and its central courtyard – Lakshmi Chowk .
Structures In City Palace Of Udaipur
The Palace has different Gates to enter the premises of Palace . Often known as Pols in the colonial language, there are three main Gateways to the Palace . The Badi Pol or The Great Gate, The Tripola which is a triple-arched gate and Hathi Pol which is known as the Elephant Gate .
- Amar Vilas
Amar Vilas is a garden located at an elevation and is built in the Mughal style . This Garden holds wonderful hanging garden and fountains and was used as a leisure by royals .
- Badi Mahal
Also known as The Great Palace or The Garden Palace , Badi Mahal is built on the top of a 89 feet rock . This Mahal comprises of a swimming pool , miniature painting , wall paintings and various artifacts from the 18th and 19th centuries .
Fateh Prakash Palace is now turned into a Hotel . The Palace holds a collection of crystal chairs , tables , beds , jewellery boxes and sofas .
- Manak Mahal
Also known as Ruby Palace , This Mahal was used as a hall for the former audience . This Palace is decorated with marbles , mirrors , rubies and different beautiful motifs .
Mor Chawk is an alluring garden which includes three peacocks . These peacocks resembles the three seasons i.e summer , winter and monsoon . And these are designed with around 5000 pieces of mirror . The garden looks more fascinating when lit up .
- Rang Bhawan
The Rang Bhawan was initially a treasury house of Mewar Ruler but now it has turned into a holy temple . The Temple is dedicated to lord Shiva , lord Krishna and Meera Bai . This Temple is considered as the most visited temple in Udaipur .
