According to historical accounts , Government of West Bengal wanted to build a bridge over the river Hoogly . At the same time the idea to create Howrah Bridge was proposed by the chief executive of East India Railway Company , but due to several reasons it was rejected . Later in 1800s , a pontoon bridge was constructed over Hoogly . Since the bridge was not that strong , Henceforth Howrah Bridge was constructed by the company The Beaithwaite Burn and Jessop Construction Company . The unique feature of this cantilever bridge is that it was built completely with steel and without the use of any nuts and bolts .
