The Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is situated in Cannaught Place of New Delhi. It is one of the famous holy place of the Sikhs and one of the most popular tourist attraction in New Delhi. The shrine was built to celebrate the visit of 8th Sikh guru Guru Harkishan.
The Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is the 18th century built huge temple. The Gurudwara was built by Sikh General Sardar Bhagel Singh in 1783. According to a mythology , it was once when Guru Gobind Singh took rest here when he was going to meet Anandpur Sahib.
According to another legend, The Gurudwara was initially a bunglow and was later turned into the sacred place when Guru Gobind Singh visited the site. It is believed that in those days small pox was raging in the city of Delhi on an epidemic form. The citizens of Delhi suffered grief and death. At this point of time GURU SAHIB dipped his holy feet in water and poured charan amrit into the small tank. As a result of which, all of those who took water from tank were cured from the disease and the people of Delhi were saved from that epidemic. The holy water is now believed to heal all kind of diseases.
Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is one of the best example of Sikh architecture. The complete structure is decorated with white marble and carvings. The shrine also comprises several domes among which the main dome is laced with solid gold leaves. This sacred site is basically a complex and comprises of a holy sarovar, Prayer hall, High secondary school, Museum, Library and a Hospital. There is also a flagpole known as Nishan Sahib which proudly waves the Gurudwara's flag.
