Shree Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Temple , also known as Srisailam Mallikarjuna Temple is one of the most popular jyotirlinga of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva. It is believed that all your past life sins are washed away even if one recite the name of 12 jyotirlinga in India every morning and evening. The holy shrine is located at Srisailam in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. The Temple is built on the top of the Nallamala hills along the banks of River Krishna. The holy shrine is one of the most beautiful in India.
According to Hindu Mythology, In Shiva Purana, When Shiva and Parvati decided to find the brides for their sons. Lord Shiva found Buddhi , Siddhi and Riddhi (goddess of intellect , Spiritual power and Prosperity , respectively) for Ganesha. Kartikeya became angry as his younger brother was getting married before him . He went away to stay alone on Mount kraunja in the name of Kumarabrahmachari. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati than came here to pacify kartikeya. Although, he didn't listen to them. Then too Shiva and Parvati kept staying there with the names - Arjun and Mallika.
The Mallikarjuna Temple is believed to be built in 6th century by King Harihara Raya of Vijayanagar. It comprises of two complex temples inside - among which one is dedicated to Lord Mallikarjuna and the other to Goddess Bhramarambha.
According to Puranas, Linga of the presiding deity Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the deity of Goddess Bhramarambha Devi is one of the eighteen Mahashaktis or the Shakthi Peethas in India. Further, the temple is so huge and magnificent that, its four entrance gates are in four different directions and districts of the state. The Tripuranthakam faces eastwards and is located in the Prakasam district. The presiding deities of this temple are God Tripuranthakeswara Swamy and Goddess Tripurasundari. The Siddhavatam faces southwards and is located in the Kadapa district. The presiding deities of this temple are God Jyotisideswara Swamy and Goddess Kamakshi. The Alampur faces towards the west and is located in the Mehboobnagar district on the banks of the River Tungabhadra. Lastly, The Umamaheswaram faces northwards and is located in the Mehboobnagar district. The presiding deities of this temple are God Umamaheswara Swamy and Goddess Umamaheswari Devi.
The holy shrine also boosts an incredible architecture, mukh mandapa hall, coloured pillars commonly knowns Gopuams and beautiful carvings. Its fort like structure attracts a lots of tourists every year. Many devotees come at this pilgrimage site to worship the deities , especially on the occasion of Mahashivratri.
